Unlike doctor-prescribed medications that have very specific dosage instructions, over-the-counter vitamins and supplements are usually free reign for consumers to choose and dose themselves. While vitamin bottles may have recommended usage instructions, it is not uncommon for people to be less serious about the usage indications versus a prescription. Many people may also mix and match vitamins, taking a multivitamin along with a handful of individual ones without consulting their healthcare provider. Unfortunately, this can lead to consuming excess amounts of vitamins, which can have serious side effects. A study by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) found that many of the participants had unhealthy levels of excess vitamin A, suggesting that it is not unusual for men and women to be over-consuming this supplement.
