Many of us take for granted the incredible muscle that is our heart. Constantly pumping oxygen-rich blood throughout the body to supply muscles and cells, this natural forcing of blood creates pressure—blood pressure. However, there is a very high risk that this pressure can become too great. In fact, one in every three adults is at risk of developing high blood pressure, known as hypertension. Perhaps even more startling is that nearly one-third of people who have hypertension do not even know they have it. Symptoms may not be present, or may be mistaken for another condition. Obesity, excessive drinking, smoking, and genetics can all contribute to the chance of developing elevated blood pressure levels. If not properly addressed, high blood pressure can cause heart damage, plaque buildup in arteries, stroke, and even death.
