PMS-Related Constipation: How to Avoid It

If you’ve ever felt a little “backed up” in the days leading up to your period, you’re not alone. During the premenstrual syndrome stage in their monthly cycles, many women experience constipation alongside the more commonly talked about menstrual cramps. This blockage is likely due to a hormone called progesterone that women produce after ovulation that prepares the uterus for maintaining a fertilized egg. Unfortunately, constipation has symptoms of its own, such as pain and bloating. Once your period begins, progesterone levels should drop and the constipation should lessen, but you shouldn’t have to suffer through this painful cycle month after month. There are several ways to relieve hormone-related constipation, like avoiding sugary, processed foods, eating more fiber, getting regular exercise, and simply drinking more water.
