With age, both men and women experience changes in their bodies that have an impact on their hormone levels. When hormone levels decrease or increase abnormally, a number of symptoms can ensue. Men may experience andropause, which is characterized by a decline in testosterone levels. Women experience menopause, which is often associated with a decline in estrogen. A symptom of both of these hormonal changes can be hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, particularly at night during sleep. Night sweats often are paired with waking up with the sensation of either being very hot or very cold. People who suffer from night sweats tend to wake up drenched in sweat that has also soaked through the sheets and pillowcases.
