Most people are familiar with the term “man boobs,” used to describe men who have noticeable extra glandular tissue behind the nipples. The official medical term is gynecomastia, and more than 30 percent of men suffer from mild to more severe forms at some point during their lifetime. But just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s normal, although it’s not considered a serious medical condition. And it’s not always caused by being overweight, as many people think. Gynecomastia is usually caused by an increase in estrogen production, a decrease in androgen production, or sometimes both. Enlargement of glandular tissue behind the nipples can be one result of this imbalance, which can be more noticeable when obesity is also present. The good news is gynecomastia can be successfully treated, many times without the need for resorting to complicated surgery.
