If you’ve ever felt a little “backed up” in the days leading up to your period, you’re not alone. During the premenstrual syndrome stage in their monthly cycles, many women experience constipation alongside the more commonly talked about menstrual cramps. This blockage is likely due to a hormone called progesterone that women produce after ovulation that prepares the uterus for maintaining a fertilized egg.
